Procedures for Editing Online via the Google/Youtube Editor
1. Agreement
Intern must Docusign the Internship Agreement prior to beginning any work. If you have not received your Agreement, contact your Supervising Producer.
2. Get Your Assigned Content/Episodes From Your Supervising Producer
Once your Internship Agreement has been signed, your Supervising Producer will email you your assigned content (show name and episodes).
3. Download Your Editing Log And Fill Out The Show and Episode Information
You must keep track of the clips you create with the editing log. This is the format we would like you to use. Download the word doc version of the log and fill it out as you go. This is mandatory. The log will help you keep track of the total length of clips you have created and allow us to keep an inventory of your work. [If you are receiving Academic Credit for your internship based on hours/days spent on an internship Your Editing Log will also be useful to keep track of the time you have worked.] Your Editing Log for each day/session must be emailed to your Supervising Producer at the end of the day/session. Email us the word doc so we can copy/paste the info if needed. The Editing Log is a necessary tool for reaching the required goal of the project. Each show or episode you are assigned must be broken down into clips that multiply the length of the original content by 20. For example for an episode that is 22 minutes in length (a standard length for a half hour show on television with the remaining time filled by commercials), you must create clips from that episode that total 440 minutes. It is recommended to notate the length of each clip in minutes and percentages of minutes for ease of adding up the total clips length. In other words, represent seconds as a fraction of a minute. For example if a clip is 2 minutes and 30 seconds, notate the clip on your log as 2.5 mins. Rounding to the nearest decimal is okay. Here's a quick reference chart to help. The youtube editor will display the clip lengths in minutes and seconds so you will need to refer to the chart (printing it out is a good idea to have on your desk/work area). You will not be assigned additional content until clips have been created and verified that equal the 20 times multiple for each episode.
4. Process for Clips Editing
You are ready to begin! Yay. Follow these specific instructions to access your content and create the clips. Some of this youtube process may be familiar to you, however, if not, these instructions are written step by step to get you all the way there. You can print this page or keep it open as a separate window in your browser.
A. Login In To The Project Channel as an approved Registered User
B. You should be taken back to youtube and you are now logged in as the Registered User.
C You are now ready to edit your episode (create clips).
You will now begin creating the clips. Follow this methodology and use the prescribed naming convention for each clip. Again, this is mandatory for uniformity.
* Note, with this online clips editing method, you’re going to be making clips by trimming off content rather than making a short clip. Large subclips are acceptable for the project and this method will get you to the 20x multiple faster.
You've just created a clip by "subtracting" approximately one minute from the full episode. If the episode was 22 minutes, you've made a 21 minute clip.
D. Naming the Clip and Filling Out the Editor Log
E. Getting Back into the Video Editor to Create the Next Clip
Note: To clip off from the back, grab the editor tool line and drag it all the way to the end of the episode (easiest when the magnifier is all the way zoomed out so the entire episode is visible on your page). Then once you slide it all the way to the end, you can adjust the magnifier to zoom in for more detail to find your split clip/edit point.
F. Rinse and Repeat
The more clips you create the more comfortable and faster you will get with the youtube editor. Because you are creating much longer clips with this method, you will need to create fewer clips to reach the designated 20x multiple for each episode. But be precise. Add up your clip lengths periodically to see where you are at (you can keep running subtotal clip lengths so you just need to add the newest clips rather than starting from the beginning with your calculator :) With this method you may need to create approximately 30-40 clips to reach the 20x multiple for the episode. After trimming off the front, and trimming off the back, you can also trim with two points inside the episode and designate these with two notations - the trim from the front AND the trim from the back, i.e. 1F1B This is another way to generate large clips that are not identical to any of the other clips you've created. That is the key. No two clips should be exactly identical.
As a further note, clips must be a minimum of 1.5 minutes (90 seconds) in length but there is no maximum length for online clips creating thus this trimming off method is the preferred method.
Remember to do your best to have the clip start at a logical spot (beginning of a sentence) but do not spend too much time deliberating over this as the goal for this project places more emphasis on quantity rather than quality in the "clip points."
Once you have created the 20x multiple for all the episodes you have been assigned, contact you Supervising Producer who will verify all the clips on the youtube channel.
Don't forget to email the completed log to your Supervising Producer at the end of each day/session. You can email the log as an attachment to an email or use the form below to attach the log (at the bottom right on the form).
Feel free to contact your Supervising Producer at any time with questions you may have along the way. Your Supervising Producer will also periodically check in with you to review your progress and guide you in the process and techniques. You may learn additional shortcuts along the way. Feel free to pass on any information that can help your fellow intern editors and we will add the info to these procedures. For ease use the form below to quickly email questions or revelations:

You can print this page or keep it open as a separate window in your browser.
A. Login In To The Project Channel as an approved Registered User
- go to youtube.com. If you are already logged in under a different account, then choose sign out on the upper right hand user icon. Then choose sign in.
- this should bring you to Google’s account page. Choose Add Account at the bottom.
- For the username (Email) type in: [email protected]
- For the password type in: Imagine123
- Click Sign In
B. You should be taken back to youtube and you are now logged in as the Registered User.
- on left side click on My Channel (if it is not on the left side click on the drop down menu next to the youtube logo on the top left side)
- on top left, next to subscribers, click on Video Manager
- on bottom left click the drop down menu next to CREATE and choose Video Editor
C You are now ready to edit your episode (create clips).
- Find your assigned show and first episode in the videos displayed on the right by scrolling it down and/or using the search tool. If your assigned episodes are not showing up in the video selections on this page, then you will need to edit these episodes by using an alternative method - that is, using the editing tools in the "enhancements" sections of the Video Manager. Click here for step-by-step instructions to edit in this manner. Return to this section and skip to letter D below to follow the rest of the procedures/process.
- Drag your episode to the left where it says Drag video here. This will load the episode into the editor.
You will now begin creating the clips. Follow this methodology and use the prescribed naming convention for each clip. Again, this is mandatory for uniformity.
- Pull the magnifyer on the bottom right side a little to the right to expand the episode timeline to a more zoomed in view. This will enable the editor tool to be more precise in finding a clip point. Vary this as you work to your liking – sometimes its helpful to go back to zoomed out view, sometimes more zoomed in. The timeline at the bottom will vary accordingly depending on amount you are zoomed in to the timeline.
* Note, with this online clips editing method, you’re going to be making clips by trimming off content rather than making a short clip. Large subclips are acceptable for the project and this method will get you to the 20x multiple faster.
- Start by making a Split in the clip at the beginning of the video. You do this by making sure the edit tool is at the beginning, then click on the X towards the top of the vertical editing tool bar line (Split Clip Here). This will create a snip at the start.
- Then drag the edit tool slider approximately 1 minute into the video (anywhere on the vertical edit line will work to grab and slide). Try to get it to a point that when you press play to preview (above) it starts cleanly – such as on the change of a shot, scene, or beginning of narration. Then click on the X on the editing line (Split Clip Here) again which will make a 2nd cut point. (You can also do this in reverse order by making the 1 minute cut point first, then going back to make the cut point at the start. Either way is fine).
- As you drag your mouse point over this one minute clip, a top heading bar will appear over the clip and you can click on the X on the right side of the top bar to remove this clip, leaving the rest of the episode intact.
You've just created a clip by "subtracting" approximately one minute from the full episode. If the episode was 22 minutes, you've made a 21 minute clip.
D. Naming the Clip and Filling Out the Editor Log
- Fill in the name in the top heading bar next to Project above the preview window. The name of the clip should be the full name of the show and episode (exact same name as the episode itself in youtube) with the designation that corresponds to what was trimmed off from either the front or the back as follows: If one minute was trimmed from the front then you add 1F to the end of the name; 2F if two minutes was trimmed from the front and so on. After trimming from the front, you will then switch gears and begin creating long clips from trimming off the back using 1B (for one minute trimmed from the back); 2B; 3B etc. As an example, for a show episode named Science Insight PAL EP13, the first clip created where one minute was trimmed off the front is named Science Insight PAL EP13 1F
- Then, BEFORE you press the Create Video Button, make sure you’ve modified the name of the clip with the right name designation, then fill out your editor log, make sure the clip name is listed in your log exactly as it was saved in youtube, add the brief clip information (very brief) in your log along with the clip length (most important). It’s easiest to note the clip length here at this juncture by looking in the preview window and notating the number on the right side - the total clip length. Then click the Create Video Button. This will take you to the Clip page of this new clip and the preview window will display the “This Video Is Currently Processing” message.
E. Getting Back into the Video Editor to Create the Next Clip
- To create the next clip (while the other clip is processing) click the Video Manager button just below the preview window; then click the CREATE drop down menu and choose Video Editor once again. You will need to drag the same episode back into the editor again to create each subsequent clip. A drag we know, but you will get fast once you do it enough. Note: You do not need to wait for the previous clip to finish processing to create the next clip, so there should be no down time in creating clip after clip.
