In the days that follow, Robbie learns to harness the strength the concentrated dose of adrenaline gives him, while coping with the side effects including extreme exhaustion after an adrenaline-fueled episode.
Robbie attends the funeral of his coach from a concealed position – a safe distance away. Chief Sanchez gives the eulogy while Guerrero scans the area in the chance that Robbie might show up. Once all have left, Robbie approaches the grave of his former coach. He makes a promise to him – that he will turn his life around and fight to make a difference in Los Angeles – not letting his coach’s death mean nothing. Robbie has realized his destiny is to remain exactly where he is - in the gang, fighting to protect those who find themselves in the wrong place, at the wrong time; to protect the cops; to protect the gang bangers from the bad cops who ought to be behind bars themselves.
Robbie visits the basement of the LAPD headquarters. The cop who assigns out the gear has known Robbie since he was a child, and is unaware that he is currently “missing.” Robbie says he’d like to borrow some kevlar vests for a school project and the cop is more than happy to accommodate.
Robbie cuts up pieces of the kevlar and fashions them to fit underneath his baggy gang clothing. To hide his identity, he creates a mask out of a reversible wool beanie cap – the type he, and the other gang members frequently wear. Once reversed, the wool mask covers his full face and reflective pieces shield his eyes.
Nobody knows who the mysterious masked gang banger is, but he appears out of nowhere with abilities that soon become legendary. But as Robbie – or Roberto Sanchez – he must walk a fine line in appearing to participate with the gang while secretly thwarting their efforts and feeding information to the police. But he must do so without being discovered by General, T, or the others in the gang, and also avoiding capture by Guerrero who is consistently just a step behind him.
Each episode of the series brings every character and major element closer to him and his secret – Guerrero; T; General; Slice; his father. And each hour pulses with the adrenaline-fueled action of the first Latino-born superhero. Adrenaline Rush has a dramatic structure that worked successfully in the Incredible Hulk series based on the comic book – with the unleashing of super-powers each episode along with the tension of near-discovery of the identity of the hero and his capture.
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, but with his own supply of the world’s most powerful drug, it’s sure to be one hell of an Adrenaline Rush.
